In Civitavecchia, the sightseeing begins at its famous port. Here you’ll find Forte Michelangelo, commissioned by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century to defend the town. Despite being severely damaged in World War II, the Renaissance structure was restored and walking around its imposing base is a must-do here.

Bask in the sun
While in Lazio, take the time to discover the beautiful beaches peppered along the coastline. Santa Marinella is one of the best and extremely close to Civitavecchia. The sandy stretch is the perfect place to bask in the Italian sunshine or enjoy a leisurely swim in the crystal-clear waters.
If you’ve worked up an appetite, this tiny village has a great selection of seafood joints where you can enjoy freshly cooked fish. Try out clam spaghetti, fried anchovies and grilled sardines as you watch the sun sink from the sky.
