The 458 Spider is the first car in the world to combine a mid-engine layout with a retractable hard-top roof. Previously, manufacturers were deterred by the lack of space to stow the roof with such a mechanical layout. Ferrari’s fresh-air supercar solves that design dilemma by automatically slotting the collapsing parts of the aluminium roof between the engine and the back of the two seats in the cockpit.
